What does birthmark surgery involve?

    For a small mark, removal may be a single procedure. For a larger one, it may be done in stages, sometimes using tissue expansion to grow extra healthy skin and rebuild the area.

    The birthmark is removed under the right anaesthetic for your child.

    Your child is followed up to check healing, and anything removed can be sent for analysis.

Is my child's birthmark dangerous?

Some birthmarks are harmless. A few need a closer look, such as a fast-growing mark in a young baby, a port wine stain near the eye, or several large brown marks. An assessment will tell you which kind your child has.

Does removing a birthmark prevent skin cancer?

The evidence does not show that surgery lowers the risk of skin cancer. Removing a large birthmark is usually about appearance, comfort or function, so it is a personal decision rather than something that has to be done.

When should a baby's birthmark be seen promptly?

A haemangioma that grows fast in the first weeks, especially near the eye, nose or mouth, should be seen without delay, as a few of them need early treatment. If a mark is changing quickly and you are concerned, get in touch and the team will advise you.

Do you treat birthmarks with laser?

Yes. Miss Torres-Grau carries out laser treatment, which can fade red or pigmented birthmarks such as port wine stains and some haemangiomas. She also assesses and, where it helps, surgically removes birthmarks, and the wider hospital team is there for the few that need medicine.

Can a birthmark come back after surgery?

If a birthmark is fully removed it does not usually return, though for a very large mark taken away in stages some colour can remain at the edges. Anything removed can be sent for analysis as agreed, and your child is followed up so that anything that does come back can be reviewed.
