About Evelina London and its plastic surgery service

Evelina is one of only two specialist children's hospitals in London. It is part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, next to St Thomas' Hospital, and fees for private care there go back into the NHS trust. Its plastic surgery team operates on over 1,000 children a year.

The Care Quality Commission has rated Evelina Outstanding since 2015. It has paediatric and neonatal intensive care units, children's cardiac surgery and a children's emergency department on the same site, with children's doctors there day and night. Day surgery takes place in the Children's Day Surgery Unit, and most children go home in three to four hours. It is a ten minute walk from Westminster or Lambeth North station.

About The Portland and children's hospital care

The Portland Hospital is a private hospital for women and children, run by HCA Healthcare UK. Miss Torres-Grau sees children in clinic there and operates in its theatres herself. Children's anaesthetists and nurses look after your child. There is a children's intensive care unit, and children's doctors are on site day and night.

The Care Quality Commission rates its surgery and children's care Good. Her clinic is at 84 Harley Street, The Portland's outpatient clinic, which has its own procedure room. Some small procedures, such as removing a mole in an older child, can be done there under local anaesthetic. Operations in theatre take place in the main hospital on Great Portland Street, opposite Great Portland Street station, where you can be dropped at the door.

Your first consultation by video or in person

Miss Torres-Grau offers a first consultation by video or in person, at either hospital. You can talk it through before you travel. That helps families outside London and families coming from abroad.

Have a clear photo of the area ready, taken in daylight. Older photos help too, because they show what has changed. Any check or treatment then happens at the hospital you choose.

Choosing your hospital

Which hospital is right for my child?

For most families, the right hospital is the one that is easier to reach. Both have specialist children's services and intensive care on site, and it is the same surgeon at both. Miss Torres-Grau sees your child herself and does any surgery herself.

Evelina London is part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, where Miss Torres-Grau holds her substantive NHS consultant post. The Portland is a private hospital for women and children. Both have children's doctors on site day and night, day surgery units and intensive care. The convenient location will usually decide it, and if there is a medical reason to prefer one hospital for your child, she will tell you at the first visit.

A useful way to choose

Choose your child's surgeon first, then the hospital

Miss Torres-Grau's London clinics sit in two hospitals. Many parents think that means two different doctors. With Miss Torres-Grau, it is one surgeon in both places.

Why children's surgeons often work across NHS and private hospitals

Many senior children's surgeons in London work this way. They have an NHS base, where they treat a great many children, and they also see private patients in a hospital where families can book at a time that suits them. So the question that matters most is who looks after your child. Once you trust the surgeon, the hospital is simply the one that is easier to reach.
