Every first visit is a conversation about what would help.

A consultation does not commit you to treatment.

Miss Torres-Grau's children's plastic surgery clinic at The Portland

Miss Jana Torres-Grau is a consultant paediatric plastic surgeon who sees private patients at The Portland Hospital, 205 to 209 Great Portland Street, London W1W 5AH. She treats children and young people with prominent ears, hand differences, birthmarks, tongue-tie, scars, moles and lumps, injuries and teenage gynaecomastia. Consultations are in English or Spanish.

I chose The Portland because it is the only private hospital in the UK dedicated to women and children. It was founded by a paediatrician, and the children's side is built around a child: the anaesthetists, the nurses, the play specialists and the intensive care unit are all paediatric. It is the same kind of set-up I work in every day at Evelina London. Several of my Evelina colleagues practise here too.

The hospital is run by HCA Healthcare UK and treats children from birth to 18. Appointments are by arrangement.

Paediatric plastic surgery offered at The Portland, from ears to scars

The treatments Miss Torres-Grau offers across London are available here. Every one of them starts with an assessment.

Seen in clinic

Every child starts with a consultation. Some small procedures, such as removing a mole in an older child, can then be done in clinic under local anaesthetic.

More about treatment

Each condition has its own page, and the full list of treatments she offers sits on the treatments page.

Surgery and children's services both rated Good by the CQC

The Care Quality Commission inspects every hospital in England. It rated The Portland Hospital Good overall at its last inspection in May 2022. Children's services and surgery were each rated Good. An independent inspector has checked how safe and caring the hospital is. That matters when the patient is your child.

Around the surgeon there is a paediatric anaesthetist, children's nurses, and resident doctors on site day and night. Miss Torres-Grau works in that kind of setting every week at Evelina London, so a private appointment follows the same standards.

Children's Hospital Care

A private children's hospital with intensive care on site

A children's hospital is built around small patients. The nurses, the anaesthetists and the wards are all set up for children.

Most children never need that back-up, and that is the point of having it. If a child did need closer care after an operation, the intensive care unit is in the same building. It is staffed by people who look after children all day.

Will my child need a general anaesthetic for surgery at The Portland?

How each treatment is usually done

Most older children having a small procedure, such as a mole removal, have a local anaesthetic and go home straight afterwards. Younger children, and anyone having a longer operation, have a general anaesthetic. A paediatric anaesthetist gives it.

Local anaesthetic
The area is numbed and your child stays awake, with a parent beside them.
Babies and toddlers
General anaesthetic
Young children can have a general anaesthetic for almost any procedure, because keeping still matters as much as comfort.
Before a general anaesthetic

Before a general anaesthetic your child will stop eating and drinking for a set number of hours. You will get the exact times in writing before the day. In a children's hospital a parent usually stays until the child is asleep, and is there when they wake.

The Portland Hospital · Harley Street

On Harley Street, a short walk from Regent's Park station

Miss Torres-Grau sees children at The Portland's outpatient clinic at 84 Harley Street. It has its own procedure room, so some small procedures can be done there. Regent's Park station, on the Bakerloo line, is a short walk away, and so is Great Portland Street station, on the Circle, Hammersmith and City and Metropolitan lines. The clinic is inside the congestion charge zone, so public transport is usually easier with a child.

Give the consultant's name at reception and you will be shown to the right room. If you are coming from outside London or from abroad, the first consultation can be by video, so the plan is settled before you travel.

Your questions

Clear answers before you book

Open any question to read more about private children's plastic surgery with Miss Torres-Grau at The Portland Hospital.

Does Miss Torres-Grau operate at The Portland Hospital, or only consult there?

Both. Miss Torres-Grau sees children for consultation at The Portland Hospital and carries out surgery in the hospital's theatres. The surgeon you meet first is the one who operates.

Do I need a GP referral to see her privately?

No referral is needed to book a private consultation. A letter from your GP is useful if you have one. Whether you need a GP referral is explained on its own page.

Can I use private medical insurance for my child's treatment?

Fees are paid directly, which gives you one clear figure before anything is booked. The practice does not work with medical insurers, so families fund their own care or are sponsored, for example by an embassy. That keeps the arrangement simple.

Is The Portland Hospital or Evelina London the right place for my child?

Miss Torres-Grau's NHS practice is at Evelina London, and her private practice runs at both Evelina London and The Portland Hospital. The choice between the two is mostly down to what suits your family. You are welcome to discuss with her which location is better suited to your child's needs.

How much does a first consultation cost?

The consultation fee is published on the fees page, so there are no surprises. Surgery is quoted after the consultation, because the price depends on what is done and the anaesthetic needed. What a first consultation costs is one click away.

Your first consultation

What to bring to your first appointment at The Portland

Bring anything that shows how the condition has looked over time. Photos from six months or a year ago tell a surgeon more than a description can.

Bring your child dressed so the area is easy to look at, and bring your questions written down. Most families leave with a plan rather than a date for surgery.

  1. Bring with you

A GP or specialist letter, if you have one

If another doctor or specialist has already assessed your child, bring the letter with you so Miss Torres-Grau can see the information already recorded.

  2. Bring with you

Photos of the area from earlier months

Photos from six months or a year ago can show how the condition has changed over time and may tell a surgeon more than a description can.

  3. Bring with you

Any previous reports, scans or letters

Bring any previous reports, scans or correspondence you already have so they can be considered as part of the assessment.

  4. Bring with you

Your child's comfort object, and a snack for afterwards

A familiar comfort object can help your child settle during the visit. Bring a snack for afterwards too.
